Guro, Snake Mask
Tribe:Guro (Guru, Kweni)
Region: Ivory Coast
Size: 25"
Weight:3 lbs
Material: wood
Masks carved by the Guro people were very often recognizable images of living
people and were commissioned for specific ceremonies and rituals by another
member of their families.
This colorfully painted mask has all the features of the Guro tribal style. It
represents an elongated girl's head with the unusually high hairstyle. The mask
has a very distinctive and elegant profile (swelling forehead, concave
face). Facial scarifications are marked on both cheeks. Two-colored earpieces
appear on both sides of the mask.
The mask is surmounted by an impressive head of a snake, which -in the region-
is regarded as a ancestor-cult symbol.
