Guro, Bird Mask
Tribe: Guro (Guru, Kweni)
Region: Ivory Coast
Size: 25"
Weight: 2lbs 3oz
Material: wood, pigments
Masks carved by the Guro were often recognisable images of living people
and were ordered for specific ceremonies and rituals.
This mask represents the face of a young girl with a yellow painted
oblong face, narrow nose, diamond shaped eyes and prominent forehead. She has
an attractive profile (swelling forehead, concave face, interesting, slightly
open mouth).
Geometrical facial scarifications are carved on both cheeks and temples. Also
the blue-white ear-pieces are geometrical.
In the same colouring a figure of a bird is surmounted on the head of the girl.
Birds symbolise some elements favourable to fecundity and hunting.
